When I first started looking into the idea of a complete career change—from IT Management to becoming a professional lorry driver—I felt quite confused and a little lost. There are so many companies offering HGV training packages, and I quickly found myself being bombarded with constant calls, hard-sell techniques and wildly varying prices. It seemed to be nothing but “sell, sell, sell”. Even after blocking numbers, I would receive calls from the same companies from completely different mobile numbers, which became extremely frustrating.
Eventually, I decided to speak to a family friend who is an HGV examiner. I have always believed that personal recommendations and word of mouth are one of the best forms of advertising, so I asked for his honest advice.
He recommended Lawlers Driver Training. He explained that they are a family-run business with lovely, genuine people, and that the candidates they put forward for test are extremely well prepared and trained to a very high standard. He also mentioned that they consistently achieve a very high first-time pass rate.
That was all I needed to hear. I decided to forget about the local training companies in my area and contacted Lawlers.
From my very first conversation with them, I knew I had made the right decision. They invited me down for a 30-minute taster session so I could make sure becoming a lorry driver was actually for me. They gave me all the information I needed, took me out for a drive and explained the different courses, what they involved and what I could expect throughout the process.
Everyone was so down to earth, friendly and approachable, and I immediately felt comfortable with them. I therefore made the decision to travel across the Pennines to complete my training with Lawlers rather than use one of the many companies closer to home.
From the very beginning, the office and administration team were fantastic. They were always friendly, helpful and available whenever I needed advice or support. The online training package and app they provide was also excellent—very easy to use, informative and instrumental in helping me pass my Theory and Hazard Perception tests, as well as my CPC Module 2 test.
My instructor was absolutely amazing, and the owner himself was incredibly patient and supportive throughout the whole process. In fact, the entire team was fantastic. They explained everything clearly, gave me useful advice and, even during the moments when I felt I had taken on too much and started doubting myself, they helped me rebuild my confidence behind the wheel.
I never felt rushed or pressured. At every stage, I felt that I was receiving the right guidance, training and support.
I am extremely happy with the training I received from Lawlers Driver Training and genuinely grateful for the time, patience and effort the whole team put into helping me achieve my goal of becoming a professional lorry driver.
A huge shout-out to Rob, Gail and Emma, and a massive thank you to the entire Lawlers team for such a fantastic experience. I would also like to appologise to a couple of the instructors for giving them motion sickness as I did have a heavy foot on the peddle at times.
